Strengthening international cooperation
The number of adults with congenital heart defects (ACHD) is growing worldwide – and with it the importance of highly specialised care and research in ACHD medicine.
Prof. Dr Oktay Tutarel, one of the world’s leading experts in this field, has now been elected President of the International Society for Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ISACHD). As Head of the EMAH Centre at the DHZC, he now stands at the helm of this globally renowned scientific society for adults with congenital heart defects.
The ISACHD promotes excellence in care, research and training for ACHD patients worldwide. Within this non-profit organisation, experts from numerous countries work together to further improve care for this steadily growing patient group.
Prof. Tutarel has been actively involved in the ISACHD for many years. Following his nomination by a specialist committee, he was elected President. In this role, he is responsible for the strategic development and management of the organisation, the promotion of international research activities, the organisation of scientific conferences, and the global representation of the professional association.
With his election, Prof. Tutarel becomes only the second president from a German institution in the history of the ISACHD – following Prof. Dr Helmut Baumgartner from Münster University Hospital.
Oktay Tutarel’s election also highlights the international expertise of the EMAH Centre at the DHZC. As one of the world’s leading centres for adults with congenital heart defects, it cares for patients from adolescence through to old age. Particular areas of focus include the highly specialised treatment of patients with complex congenital heart defects, severe heart failure, cardiac arrhythmias, pregnancies in adults with congenital heart defects, and pulmonary hypertension.
Through close interdisciplinary collaboration within the DHZC and the Charité, the EMAH Centre combines highly specialised care with innovative research and international partnerships – with the aim of continuously improving diagnosis, treatment and quality of life for people with congenital heart defects.
We warmly congratulate Prof. Dr Oktay Tutarel on his election and wish him every success in his presidency.
