On World Patient Safety Day 2025: Berlin-based healthtech startup tio launches app to strengthen child safety in healthcare

On September 17, the World Health Organization (WHO) will celebrate World Patient Safety Day 2025 under the theme “Safe care for every newborn and every child.” As part of this global campaign, Berlin-based startup tio announces the beta launch of its mobile app designed to empower parents and caregivers in protecting their children's health.

Every year, millions of children experience preventable harm in healthcare settings. Studies report that up to 91% of children in pediatric intensive care units are exposed to at least one safety-related event.

The WHO calls on families to “be your child’s safety champion” – and this is where the new app tio comes in. The app enables parents to record symptoms and appointments, access age-specific health tips, prepare for consultations, and double-check medications or allergies. Most importantly, it offers reassurance and clear next steps in stressful moments.

Key features include:

  • Symptom and medication tracking for doctor visits
  • Reliable content on childhood illnesses and safety practices
  • Preparation checklists for appointments
  • Chat-based 24/7 support for uncertain health situations

tio was created by parents, pediatricians, and digital health experts. The app reflects WHO guidance for patient engagement and pediatric safety, including the 2025 campaign’s call for better family communication and medical decision-making.

The beta version is now open to families in Germany. Parents can sign up at https://tiohealth.de/start/#free-trial to test the app for free and share feedback.
