Nursing and Longterm Care

As populations age and healthcare needs become more complex, nursing and long-term care are becoming increasingly important. 

Today, approximately 52,000 people in Berlin and Brandenburg receive care in residential care facilities, while more than 93,000 individuals requiring care are supported by outpatient nursing services. However, well over half of long-term care is provided exclusively by family caregivers and/or volunteer support networks. 


STRENGTHENING THE ATTRACTIVENESS OF THE NURSING PROFESSION 

Germany faces a severe shortage of skilled professionals in all nursing professions, a situation expected to intensify further in the coming years. Strengthening the attractiveness of nursing careers is therefore essential. 

Regional initiatives are working to improve the visibility of nursing careers, support workforce development and encourage innovation in care delivery. New approaches to workplace health, digitalization and flexible employment models are helping to make the profession more attractive for future generations. 


CONCEPTS AND PRODUCTS FOR INDEPENDENT LIVING INTO OLD AGE 

Research institutions and companies in Berlin and Brandenburg develop new services, technologies and digital solutions to ease the burden on both professional and informal caregivers. Many of these solutions support elderly people to lead an independent life for as long as possible. 

These include alternative housing models such as shared care housing communities, barrier-reduced housing with support and care services and Ambient Assisted Living technical solutions.
