„New Public Health“: New doctoral program at Charité

The Hans-Böckler-Foundation-funded doctoral program, “New Public Health – Health promotion and disease prevention across the life course”, has commenced its work. Based at the Institute of Health and Nursing Science at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, it is being developed in cooperation with Alice Salomon University of Applied Science Berlin, the Berlin School of Public Health, Dresden University of Technology, and the University of Vechta

Over the next four years, the interdisciplinary research group will investigate the advancement of the research field of New Public Health. The emphasis here is on health promotion and prevention throughout the life course. “Health is shaped throughout our lives – from childhood through education and working life to old age. The New Public Health doctoral program is dedicated to research that focuses on these stages of life and identifies ways in which health and participation can be sustainably strengthened for all social groups”, says Prof. Christiane Stock, spokesperson for the doctoral program.

New Public Health considers health from a life course perspective. The family is the first socialization environment, followed by a period of education and career entry for young people. Subsequently, the focus shifts to workplace health promotion and prevention of work-related illnesses are added, culminating in the phase of healthy aging. The four subject areas offer doctoral students the opportunity to conduct their research work within a structured framework and in exchange with established scientists. In the initial funding phase, twelve scholarships will be awarded for a period of three years each.
