Virtual & Augmented Reality (VR/AR) for Training in health care

10:30 – 11:15 a.m.
__Box 1, Hall 2.2

Rapid progress in the development of medical devices, increasing complexity of technology, new surgical procedures - the training of medical personnel has to be demand-oriented, up-to-date and realistic. Virtual and Augmented Reality makes this possible by allowing skills and techniques to be practiced in simulations of clinical scenarios. Early in the training, the acquired know-how can be applied practically. New ways of interacting with the learning content create a motivational, multi-sensory learning experience in a safe learning environment where making mistakes is allowed. Digital learning outcomes and analyses also increase sustainability for learners and trainers. Economic efficiency and effectiveness are given, but what is the status quo in practice? An exchange of experiences enhanced with best practices.

UX Tips for the Usability File: First Requirements to Medical Software Certification

2:30 – 3:15 p.m.
__Hub 4, Hall 4.2

In the development and design of medical devices, a large number of complex regulations must be taken into account. The usability of a medical device is a decisive factor in enabling users to operate them intuitively and safely. For this reason, the usability and user experience (UX) of a medical device plays an essential role, in particular in the framework of market entry and the necessary approval procedures. Throughout the entire product development process, the usability of the product must comply with the requirements of DIN EN 60601-1-6, DIN EN 62366-1 and the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). This must be proven and documented in the usability file. With the Regulation 2017/745 relating to medical devices, these requirements have been further reinforced and made concrete, especially with regard to safety-relevant specifications.

In our presentation we will give an overview of medical software product development processes. On the one hand, we will clarify what is meant by the term certification. On the other, we will present a practical guide to provide answers to questions you may have when planning your certification process: How do I identify user needs and possible risks in the product? How do I translate these into concrete product requirements? What do I have to consider for the documentation?

In addition to fulfilling the regulatory requirements, we will also address other benefits which can be gained through UX methods. Products - especially IT-based solutions - are more successful if they are consistently aligned with user needs. The user-centred design process takes into account the interaction from the perspective of the numerous stakeholders involved: Users (patients/professionals), developers, designers, risk managers, project managers and product owners.

The session is organised by the Mittelstand 4.0-Kompetenzzentrum Usability in cooperation with the Cluster ICT | Media | Creative Industries.
