In 2009, more than 350,000 people were employed in the health care industry of Berlin and Brandenburg – that is over one-eighth of all persons employed in the region. They contributed nearly 14 billion Euros to the overall economic output. And yet these figures will be increasing in the future. By 2030, an estimated number of 380,000 employees will responsible for an overall economic output of 20 billion Euros.
Thus the healthcare industry in Berlin und Brandenburg assures employment and economic as well as scientific growth to an extent unmatched by hardly any other region in Germany.  
Trailblazing insights are at the centre of our capacities, as well as new procedures and excellent education. Our goal is to preserve, to restore, and to nurture everybody’s health through scientific and social ingenuity. The Charité has succeeded in this for nearly three centuries, the health resorts of Bad Saarow for 100 years and German Heart Institute Berlin over two decades. The new Berlin-Brandenburg Centre for Regenerative Therapies will set similar standards in the near future.

The region offers a wide range from basic care to high-end medicine, from prevention to highly specialised rehabilitation. Pharmaceutical brands rich in tradition, such as Bayer Schering Pharma, Berlin-Chemie and Pfizer conduct research and produce pharmaceuticals on location. 180 biotechnological as well as 200 medical-technical enterprises, most of which are small and medium-sized businesses, contribute to the already strong basis of the healthcare industry.

In order to develop the scientific and economic position of the region, the governments of the states of Berlin and Brandenburg have put the master plan "Healthregion Berlin Brandenburg" into effect. It's key to a continued success is a continued close interplay between research, development and education/vocational training with production, application and medical care.

All of these activities are integrated and coordinated through the Network "Gesundheitswirtschaft Berlin Brandenburg" under the brand of "HealthCapital".  
The cooperation of all those involved, extending beyond areas of activity, traditional boundaries of specialist disciplines and conventional structures, decides on the degree and speed of innovation. This collaboration allows the regional players of the healthcare industry to form new joint projects, to tread unbeaten paths and to create cross-regional and cross-national strategies. As a result, each individual partner profits together with the entire region.
