Impressive Research, efficient networks
Berlin-Brandenburg is one of Europe's key science regions: its density of university and non-university research institutions is unique in Germany. Synergies emerge from the intense interconnection in the life sciences and the integration of key technologies such as IT, nanotechnology, photonics and microsystems technology with partners from clinics, hospitals and business. The strong networks lead to top research output and its translation into innovative products. There are 35 major research institutions and universities with a focus on the life sciences in the region including four Max Planck Institutes, two Fraunhofer Institutes, two Leibniz Institutes and two Helmholtz Centers. This innovative environment provides top conditions for young companies and start-ups. At the same time, the capital region attracts renowned scientists and experienced managers from around the globe.
The Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) is one of the capital region’s important centers for biomedical research. It is located on Campus Berlin-Buch, which provides an excellent environment for top-level interdisciplinary, patient-oriented research. The Berlin Institute of Health (BIH) was founded as the result of an institutional partnership between Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the Max Delbrück Center. The translational-research-oriented institute opens up a completely new dimension for the life sciences in the region.
